President M7 Directs Refund Of Mobile Money Tax

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has ordered a refund to Ugandans who have been subjected to a 1 percent Mobile Money Tax.

In a blog post on Thursday, the President noted that the tax should be 0.5 not 1% which he says came up by mistake.

Mbarara News has learnt that the President is not happy with a cross section of officials including some Ministers for this mess.

In the blog post, the Presidents adds that “Parliament, when it reconvenes, will be requested to correct it. The ones whose deductions had been made on the basis of 1% should have their money reimbursed.”

The President however insists that the Mobile Money and the Social media tax cannot be revoked.

A cross section of Ugandans has in the past week demanded the scrapping of these taxes not a mere reduction of them.

It is not clear how the refund will be made.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda told Parliament that government is reviewing these taxes.
