Rights Bodies Seek Justice For Assaulted Journalist

Human Rights Network for Journalists (HRNJ)- a Uganda based human rights organisation has offered to support vision group journalist Damba Wiziri , who was assaulted early this week while on duty.
The Mbarara based journalist was assaulted by people alleged to be workers of ICOBI- an organisation based in Sheema Municipality as he covered a political related event.

On Monday, a cross section of people in Sheema Municipality convened a meeting to discuss the outcome of the July 27 Poll in the area that saw Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye elected as the Shhema Municipality MP.
The legislator is the founder of ICOBI.

In the incident, Damba sustained severe injuries and has since been admitted at Mayanja Memorial Hospital in Mbarara town.

According to Robert Sempala- the HRNJ National coordinator, they are determined to support Damba to ensure that justice is served.
Sempala observes that it is unfortunate for people to attack journalists adding that security agencies must swiftly investigate this case and bring to book all those responsible.

Damba’s equipment was destroyed in the incident while his personal property like money was also taken.
According to Police in Sheema, investigations into this case are ongoing.
