Billionaire Sudhir Ruparelia
Ugandan property mogul Sudhir Ruparelia has built an empire that has contributed significantly to the country’s economy. Born to an Indian emigrant in Uganda, Sudhir’s love for the country is not opportunistic, unlike many investors who flock to Uganda for benefits.
His family went into exile in the UK following Idi Amin’s expulsion of Indians in 1972, where Sudhir hustled to make a living, and later returned to Uganda in 1985 after the overthrow of the government by the National Resistance Army.
Sudhir started from scratch, importing alcohol and wines from Kenya and selling them in Uganda, which became his first lucrative business. He later transformed his forex bureau, Crane Forex Bureau, into Crane Bank, and after years of patience and trustworthiness, he built the Ruparelia Group of Companies, a chain of heavy investments in real estate, insurance, banking, education, broadcasting, hotels and resorts, floriculture, and many other ventures.
The Group’s most impressive investments are in the real estate, tourism, and hospitality sectors, which have been business hubs and tourist hangout places with world-standard services. The Ruparelia Foundation, which is credited for its social responsibility, has been giving back to the community through outreaches to orphanages, sponsoring sports activities, and health camps.
Victoria University, one of the major investments in Uganda’s education sector owned by Sudhir, provides hundreds of scholarships to students every year, while his business empire employs tens of thousands of Ugandans.
According to Forbes, Sudhir had an estimated net worth of $1.2 billion in January 2021, making him the wealthiest person in Uganda and the entire East Africa. His boundless courage and motivation for building Uganda make him an accomplished business magnate whose investment potential powers Uganda’s economy.
Sudhir’s success is not only about creating employment for people but also about ensuring that those who use his establishments are also making money. His passion for building Uganda and giving back to the community is evident through his philanthropic efforts through the Ruparelia Foundation.
Sudhir’s legacy will continue to inspire generations of Ugandans to come, and his business empire will contribute significantly to the country’s economic growth.
